Our History…

The story of the Flamingo Specialist Group (FSG) spans over 50 years, originating as the International Council for Bird Preservation (ICBP) flamingo working group in 1971. It  was re-organized in 1978 to include a subgroup specifically addressing  old world flamingos.  The working group became a joint group of ICBP and the International Waterfowl Research Bureau (IWRB) and by 1986 was called the Flamingo Research Specialist Group. When ICBP became BirdlLife International in 1993 it turned over its responsibility for the waterbird working groups, also associated with the IUCN Species Survival Commission (SSC) by this time, to the IWRB. The IWRB merged with the Asian Wetland Bureau and Wetlands for the Americas to become Wetlands International in 1995 and the Research Specialist Groups were renamed Specialist Groups. The final name change for the FSG occurred in 2019, when the group previously under both IUCN SSC and Wetlands International became simply the  IUCN SSC Flamingo Specialist Group.
